BMW 328 Touring, winner of the Mille Miglia
The Mille Miglia is one of the most famous races in the world and has been held in Italy since 1927. This 1000+ mile endurance competition has been the scene of many sporting and technological feats, and has been won by some of the most iconic cars in history. However, one of the cars that stands out the most in this race is the BMW 328 Touring.
This BMW 328 Touring, with which Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäuer won the 1940 Mille Miglia, was bodied by the Milanese Touring marque in 1939 to take part in the then prestigious race. The bodywork designed for the 328, known as the “superleggera”, allowed this beautiful coupé to compete with a total weight of just 780 kilograms, which, with its 130 hp in-line six-cylinder engine, enabled it to reach a top speed of 220 km/h.
Its triumph at the Mille Miglia in 1940 was not only an impressive victory, but also helped put BMW on the map of the racing world. With its innovative design and advanced technology, the BMW 328 Touring remains an example of automotive engineering excellence and a reminder of the skill and prowess of the great racers of the past.
