The Ascari Ecosse is 25 years old and deserves a well-deserved tribute! This limited edition sports car, launched by the British marque Ascari in 1998, has left an indelible mark on the world of classic cars.
Based on the stunning Ascari FGT prototype, the Ecosse was Ascari’s first production car – and what a debut it had! With a spectacular design by Lee Noble and a centrally positioned, fuel injected 6-litre Chevrolet V8 engine, it became a favourite with lovers of speed and elegance.
But that’s not all. The Ecosse wasn’t just a style splurge, it also proved its worth in racing. Fearless Dutchman Klaas Zwart decided to enter the modified FGT prototype in the British Grand Touring Championship. Although it failed to qualify for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it did manage to win an event at the Silverstone Circuit in 1995 – a promising start!
After that exciting season, Ascari decided to launch the production version of the Ecosse. Equipped with a BMW V8 engine tuned by Hartge, this 300 hp car became an unstoppable machine. But that wasn’t enough for Ascari, as they also introduced a version with a 4.7-litre 400 hp engine, capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds – a real beast on the road!
Not only did the Ascari Ecosse impress under the bonnet, it also stood out for its aerodynamic design and lightweight construction. With a chassis and wishbone suspension supporting a fibreglass body, it weighed just 1250 kg. In addition, its ceramic-coated exhaust system gave it a unique and powerful touch.
However, production of the Ecosse was limited to just 17 units, making it a true collector’s item. To this day, only nine of these cars still exist, as the others were unfortunately destroyed. Each Ascari Ecosse involved 450 hours of work and an investment of £2.5 million.
But as every cycle comes to an end, the Ecosse was replaced in 2003 by the Ascari KZ1, another iconic British car.
In 2023, we celebrate 25 years since the launch of the Ascari Ecosse. This car left us with indelible memories and proved that the combination of elegance, speed and performance can reach unparalleled heights. Its legacy will live on in the hearts of classic car lovers.
