Alfa Romeo Iguana and Lamborghini Flying Star: Two Forgotten Legends of the Automobile World

In the vibrant and exciting world of automotive design, there are prototypes that, despite their promise and potential, never make it to mass production glory. Two such notable examples are the Alfa Romeo Iguana and the Lamborghini Flying Star, two gems of engineering and design that sadly fell by the wayside.

Alfa Romeo Iguana: Fiberglass Elegance

The year was 1969 when designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, of the prestigious Italdesign firm, presented to the world the stunning Alfa Romeo Iguana. Conceived as a prototype based on the iconic Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale Tipo 33/2, this fiberglass coupe captured the imagination of motoring enthusiasts at its unveiling at the Monza Sports Car Show.

Equipped with a powerful 1,995 cc aluminum V8 engine, the Iguana roared with an output of 230 hp at 8,000 rpm, reaching a top speed of 260 km/h. Although it was never more than a concept car, its influence endured in other emblematic designs by the Italian Giugiaro, including the legendary DMC DeLorean.

Lamborghini Flying Star: A Bold Bet That Didn’t Fit In

Meanwhile, in 1966, Carrozzeria Touring presented its own dream to the world: the Lamborghini Flying Star II. Built on a Lamborghini chassis with a front engine, this prototype sought to capture the attention of the Italian manufacturer at a time when the firm was experiencing financial difficulties.

However, Carrozzeria Touring’s ambitious vision did not match Lamborghini’s plans. Its design, while daring, seemed more suited to a family car than to the sporty styling Lamborghini was looking for. Tragically, this project marked the final closure of Carrozzeria Touring, leaving the Flying Star II as its last creative gasp.

Technical Details that Lingers in Memory

Although these prototypes never made it to series production, their technical features continue to impress car enthusiasts even decades after their creation.

The Alfa Romeo Iguana, with its 1,995 cc DOHC V8 engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, stood out with a length of 4,050 mm and a weight of 700 kg.

On the other hand, the Lamborghini Flying Star II, equipped with a powerful 4.0-liter DOHC V12 engine delivering 320 hp at 6500 rpm, exhibited a length of 4380 mm and a weight of 1300 kg.

Although their paths never took them to series production, the legacy of the Alfa Romeo Iguana and the Lamborghini Flying Star remains as a testament to the audacity and creativity that have defined the automotive industry over the years. Despite their commercial failure, these prototypes continue to inspire designers and enthusiasts, reminding us that in the automotive world, even the biggest dreams can get stuck on the road to oblivion.
